Prostate Cancer is one of the leading killers of men and each year more than 150,000 men find out they have prostate cancer. Cancer of the prostate can go undetected for years because there may be no symptoms. The only way to detect prostate cancer in its earliest and most curable stage is by getting a prostate cancer screening which consists of a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test, and a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE).

The 18th annual JTD Hospital Foundation held recently at Arrowhead Golf Club in Minster, Ohio raised over $43,000 in net profit to benefit Grand Lake Hospice and JTD Hospital Foundation. Since the inception of the golf outing over $317,000 in net profit has been raised to support programs, services and equipment for the Hospital.

Wilson Memorial Hospital has expanded their healthcare service line to include sports medicine and athletic training services. By the start of the 2010 fall high school sports season, Wilson Memorial will be the official sports medicine provider for the following four Shelby County schools: Sidney High School, Lehman Catholic High School, Fort Loramie High School and Anna High School. Wilson Memorial will provide full time athletic training coverage for each of the school’s athletic programs and access to the hospital’s comprehensive orthopedic and sports medicine services.

As summer approaches, bringing with it warmer temperatures, Safe Kids Greater Dayton and Dayton Children’s is working to increase awareness and urge caregivers to never leave children alone in a vehicle. Junior League and Dayton Children’s Team up for Bicycle Safety

It’s that time of year again—summer’s here and kids are looking forward to spending more time outside with friends. During the summer months, children often use bikes as their mode of transportation; to and from friends’ houses, the pool, and the park. It is important to educate children on bike safety, especially the importance of wearing a helmet. Head injury is the leading cause of death in bicycle crashes and is the most important determinant of bicycle related death and permanent disability. In 2008, 261 children were treated in The Regional Pediatric Trauma and Emergency Center at Dayton Children’s for injuries from bike crashes.

In 2007, the Regional Pediatric Trauma and Emergency Center at Dayton Children’s admitted 142 children with burn related injuries; 43 percent of these children were treated for scalds from hot water or food. Scald burns are most common type of burn-related injuries among young children, compared to contact burns, caused by direct contact with fire, which is more prevalent among older children.

Shirley Mullins of Yellow Springs recently won two Olympic medals, a feat she wasn’t sure she’d be able to complete just a couple of weeks ago. Mullins, 73, fell at her home earlier this summer, spraining her right thumb. Wilson Hospice Receives Perfect Score From State

Wilson Hospice received a perfect score from surveyors from The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) who recently visited Wilson Memorial Hospital’s Hospice Care division to perform a required survey for proper state licensure and Medicare/Medicaid certification. Meet “METI Man”, a mechanical patient simulator, the latest in robotic technology that allows new nurses at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney to get a new kind of hands-on experience to enhance their clinical competence and confidence, thanks to a new partnership with the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio. On Friday, July 18, five new nurses in orientation at Wilson honed their patient care skills using the METI Human Patient Simulator provided by Wright State University’s College of Nursing and Health and used by the institute, which will help the nurses shorten the time it takes to become experienced, veteran nurses.

Greenville EMS department to receive Star of Life award

The Greenville EMS department has been selected as one of the 10 Star of Life recipients in Ohio. Greenville EMS personnel were nominated by The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton for their handling of the near drowning of Lainey Miller in May 2007. Police received a call of a 2-year-old child who was found unconscious and not breathing in a backyard swimming pool. Greenville EMS were dispatched to the scene and immediately began CPR. They sent Miller to Dayton Children’s, where she recovered from her injuries.

A Greene Memorial Hospital physician is the first in the area to offer Prialt, an advanced pain therapy medication developed to mimic the venom of a sea snail. Amol Soin, M.D., M.B.A., owner and chairman of the Ohio Pain Clinic in Beavercreek and Centerville, began offering the treatment on March 20 to treat a woman with chronic headaches. Dayton Children’s ambassador to represent Ohio in national program

Devon Eley, a child ambassador from The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton, has been selected to represent Ohio at the nation’s capital for the Children’s Miracle Network Champions Across America program from March 12 to March 19. Eley, who lives in Arcanum, will visit Washington D.C. with child ambassadors from every state to share their stories of remarkable medical experience, representing the more than 17 million children treated at Children’s Miracle Network hospitals throughout the United States.

The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton is pleased to announce the re-opening of three west, the hospital’s general pediatric inpatient unit that recently underwent a $3.4 million renovation project. A private grand opening celebration will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, March 7, in the unit to commemorate the opening. Three west is a 21,165 square foot unit that provides family-centered care in a child-friendly, healing environment, designed to blend the latest technology with a soothing, aquatic theme that aims to minimize patient and family anxiety.

Stuck in a room and without access to transportation, hot, made-to-order food is delivered by a room service host within minutes. But it’s not a tired businessman in a hotel making the call – it’s a patient admitted at The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton. The pediatric hospital in Dayton recently launched a food service on demand program for patients, with a menu of over 150 hot and cold items available from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Students at the University of Dayton are dancing to make a difference in the lives of local children during the 9th annual Dance Marathon on Saturday, February 9, held at the RecPlex Center on UD’s campus starting at noon and continuing until midnight. Dance Marathon is a 12-hour event to raise money for The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton, a local Children’s Miracle Network hospital. It features theme dance hours, live music, contests, food and fun. Patient families from Dayton Children’s will also attend throughout the day to share their experiences at the hospital.

Volunteers needed at Dayton Children’s

The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton is in need of committed volunteers to work in a number of areas throughout the hospital: Family Resource Center. The Family Resource Center at Dayton Children’s is a free information library for patients, parents, families, child care centers, health care professionals and the general public. The center needs volunteers to help provide informational support to the people it serves. The Family Resource Center serves approximately 500 families every month – approximately 6,000 families a year. Volunteers in the Family Resource Center are self-motivated and enjoy helping people who need information. These volunteers are also good listeners, have strong computer skills and are comfortable searching the internet. This is the ideal opportunity for retired librarians, school nurses, social workers or others who enjoy a challenge.

Neurologist Joins GMH Medical Staff

Bryan Bjornstad, M.D. is happy to be back in Ohio. Dr. Bjornstad and his wife Amy grew up in Ohio. They recently moved back to be closer to family as he starts a new neurology practice. Dr. Bjornstad will be opening his practice February 1st at Greene Memorial Hospital’s Beavercreek Health Park. The office is located at 3359 Kemp Road in Beavercreek. He is Board Certified in Neurology and is also board certified in Clinical Neurophysiology (the study of the functions of the nervous system). In addition, Dr. Bjornstad is Board Eligible in Sleep Medicine. He will be focusing much of his practice on sleep disorders and epilepsy.

TWIGs (Terrific Women in Giving), the auxiliary of The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton, presented Madonna Alread, chair of Dayton Children’s Board of Trustees, with a check for $231,500 at their annual meeting. The donation will be applied to the TWIGs total pledge of $500,000 to provide monitors for each patient room at Dayton Children’s and to an endowment to provide training and certification for continued nursing excellence.

Caring At Christmas Donates $30,000 to Wilson Hospice

Instead of mailing Christmas cards to friends and relatives, many area residents chose to donate the money they would have spent on cards and postage to Caring at Christmas, an annual campaign to raise money for charity. 2007 marked the 15th year of the Caring at Christmas campaign for Wilson Hospice Care. The 2007 campaign raised $30,155. This is the most money the Caring at Christmas program has ever collected since its inception in 1993. To date, the Caring at Christmas program has donated nearly $300,000 to Wilson Hospice Care.
